Board of Directors
Welcome new Board members! You probably know both Akilah and Midge by sight from the dance floor. The photo panel outside the office will help you match a face with a name.
Akilah Sanders-Reed has joined the Tapestry Board. In her application letter, she eloquently describes her vision of service:“At the heart of Tapestry is its community. The people who come to dance are a reflection of the organization and its values. While much of this is organic, it also takes intentionality to be a truly inclusive and welcoming community. As a young person, a demographic typically underrepresented at Tapestry, I hope that my perspective will help uphold the mission to ‘create opportunities to participate in the joys of dance’ in such a way that those opportunities are available and welcoming to everyone.”
Midge Olsen is our second new board member. She and her husband, Gordon Olsen, are long-time Tapestry Sustainer members and long-time contra and English Country dancers. She writes:“Coming on the Tapestry Board will be an adventure. I hope I can contribute something back to the dance community that is near and dear to my heart.”

Mary Cummings, Executive Director
Mary Cummings is a professional arts administrator, with leadership experience in visual, literary and performing arts organizations, including The Loft Literary Center, Bloomington Theatre and Art Center, Minnesota Museum of Art, Missoula Museum of the Arts, and others. She joined Tapestry as Executive Director in September of 2011. She writes: “I love Tapestry’s mission statement, especially the phrase ‘creates opportunities for participation in the joys of dance and music.’ I find great joy in connecting people with an art form that brings out their creativity, energy and sense of the beautiful. There’s a hunger for expression through dance, and Tapestry is an amazing place to meet that need.”
Dana Hoeschen, Financial Assistant
Dana Hoeschen joined us as Financial Assistant, bringing extensive experience in project and office management and accounting functions.
Leslie MacKenzie, Marketing Assistant & Rental Manager
Leslie is responsible for marketing the Center and its activities, for managing studio rentals and assisting with facilities. She began dancing at Tapestry in 1994, doing Contra dance and swing. When she met her husband-to-be, she brought him to Tapestry to see how well they would fit together on the dance floor. A natural community organizer with tremendous enthusiasm, she enjoys connecting people to organizations and activities they’ll love. “What I have always appreciated about Tapestry is that it is a safe space. In a world filled with work and responsibility, dance provides an opportunity for sheer joy, and it’s accessible to everyone – no experience needed. “
