Come support the budding Contra talent at the 2nd Community Contra Band and Caller night!
Join the Community Contra Dance Band on Saturday August 30 for the regular Saturday contra dance. Any and all musicians and instruments are welcome to join the band if they can attend at least one of the two practices and play from our list of jigs and reels at a tempo of 115 beats per minute. We will play about 10 contra dances for which we have chosen reel and jig medleys made from the traditions of Ireland, Appalachia, and New England. In addition, we will play 2 waltzes. In order to play in the band you should attend at least one of the practices. The last practice night is August 28th.
The core group of 3 experienced contra dance musicians for the band are: Pat O’Loughlin, Ken Steffenson and Bob Walser.
Contact Pat O’Loughlin via email at firstname.lastname@example.org to sign up and get the official set list. Keyboard players must bring their own electric keyboard as an acoustic piano will not be available.
Ever dreamed of calling a contra dance? Here’s your chance (again)!
On Saturday, August 30th, Tapestry will once again be welcoming the budding calling talent in our community to step up to the mic. Beau Farmer, David Kirchner, and Robin Nelson (the “regular” contra callers) encourage all interested folks to contact one of them for mentoring and coaching. We’ll help you find a dance to call and give you pointers on ways to successfully teach the walk-through and then call.
To give everyone a chance to try out calling ahead of time, there will be an informal gatherings of callers and dancers at Robin’s house. (Last chance practice is Friday, August 29th at 7:30.) We’ll dance for each other’s calling, give support and feedback, and generally have fun!
Folks who participated in the Community Contra Night in March are welcome to join in again. And if there is anyone else out there who’d like to give it a go, don’t be shy – let us know!
