Join us for waltz fun on 3rd Saturdays! Contratopia is excited to provide live music this month for our new waltz event here at Tapestry. There will be a lesson with teacher Denny Hukriede included from 3:30 to 4:00 PM followed by open waltz and other couples dancing from 4 to 6 PM. The format will be 3 waltzes followed by another kind of dance of the bands choosing (including polka, schottis, hambo, swing, tango and more) and then start again with waltz. Even though this is couples dancing, there is no need to bring a partner. All levels of ability are welcome.
These four great players- Patrice Pakiz (piano, oboe, percussion) and Pat O’Loughlin (english concertina and banjo) from the Twin Cities and John Goodin (mandolin and guitar) and Erik Sessions (fiddle) from Decorah, Iowa- began playing together in late 1999 and decided that the rewards of working together outweighed the challenges of geographical separation. Many groups of dancers have enjoyed Contratopia’s unique musical approach at events from Montana to Florida and the band anticipates continuing to share their enthusiasm for jigs, reels and waltzes with dancers for a long time to come. In addition to live performance the band has recorded three CDs: Smitten (2004), Hands Four (2001) and Ballroom Echoes (2002) are collections of mostly original reels, jigs and waltzes. This band doesn’t get to Tapestry nearly often enough for their many fans among the dancers. Do not miss!
