What is Tapestry Class Series?
Join us for Tapestry Class Series—a joyful celebration of global dance traditions right here in the Twin Cities! In partnership with local cultural groups, instructors, and dance organizations, Tapestry offers beginner-friendly class sessions (2–6 weeks) throughout the year that invite you to explore a wide variety of participatory dance styles from around the world.
What should I expect?
Whether you're stepping onto the dance floor for the first time or looking to broaden your movement vocabulary, these classes are a fun, welcoming way to learn, connect, and be inspired by the richness of other cultures. Each series highlights styles not typically found in our regular programming, giving you a fresh opportunity to move, grow, and dance in community.
What should I wear?
Come as you are - just bring your curiosity and energy! Comfortable, casual clothing and flexible shoes are recommended - clean soles, please!

Introduction to Nordic Dance

Oct 15 - Our first session will be all about context. Kari Tauring will teach from her twenty years of experience in the Nordic and Scandinavian music and dance community. Kari teaches with non-gendered terminology as they do in Sweden and Norway. No partner or experience is necessary, all ages and abilities are welcomed.Who/where are the “Nordic” Countries?
Become familiar with the maps, terrains, and language groupings of Nordic.What is a Nordic Way of Moving?
Body movement on bog or snow or field or mountain’s edge in the most Nordic regions of Europe are articulated in Norwegian as Svikt, Tyngde, and Kraft - Wave, Weight. and Power.Whether on bog or snow or field or mountainside, staying in Stav and moving in the flow of Svikt, Tyngde, and Kraft are essential! We will practice these concepts as we sing/hum a variety of traditional dance tunes and listen to a variety of recordings.
Nordic has solo dances, for pairs and threesomes. There are dances four people and for many people in a circle! Gathering and departing songs are part of this tradition. You will learn Komme Alle and Liv Vel (Norwegian) plus a variety of longdances.
Explore the Nordic flavors of old time dances such as Schottische, Polka, Waltz. Deepen your understanding of the regional community dances such as Telegangar and Slangpolska.
Listen to the differences between national instruments and singing styles. Feel how your body moves differently between them!
Nordic dancing is good cross-training for skiing or skating. In any Northern climate, that’s a good thing!

Experience the vibrant rhythms of Brazil! Brazil Arts Twin Cities offers a dynamic 3-week dance series blending the joyful steps of Forró with the energetic beats of Samba and Axé. Perfect for beginners, this series is a wonderful introduction to Brazil's rich cultural heritage through participatory dance.Brazil Arts Twin Cities is a collaborative space to develop the collective well-being of Brazilians and those who love Brazilian culture in the Twin Cities. The Director and creative mind behind Brazil Arts Twin Cities is Ginga da Bahia. He is a choreographer, musician, and dance and capoeira instructor from Bahia, Brazil who has performed with the Balé Folclórico and many other companies in Brazil, toured in Europe, performed in Symphony Space NYC, and performed regularly at S.O.B.'s (Sounds of Brazil) in NYC.
Now in Minneapolis, he is leading the Brazil Arts Cultural Center and looking to bring together the city's learners, teachers, movers, and artist who wish to celebrate unity and Brazilian culture.
