Tapestry Class Series

*Class cards only available at the door

Tapestry is kicking off a new program! Experience a wide range of participatory dance forms from many different cultures around the world as we partner with other dance organizations and groups around the Twin Cities.

Tapestry Class Series will feature a variety of dance styles, most not currently offered within our own regular programming, provide lessons particularly geared towards beginners, and offer a chance to connect with other dance communities around the Twin Cities.

Classes will be held Wednesday evenings, at varying times depending on instructor availability, throughout the year.

UPCOMING SCHEDULE

  • Bollywood with South Asian Arts and Theater House

  • Norwegian Winter Dances

All levels of mobility and experience are welcome to join Carol Sersland and Kari Tauring for a winter's dive into "Nordic Movement." The concepts svikt, tyngde, and kraft or wave, weight, and power are used to describe body movement in Nordic solo and couples dancing, skiing, or simply walking on the ice.

Kari and Carol study and teach the intersection of ancient rune shapes made naturally within traditional dances of Scandinavia, receiving a Legacy and Heritage funded grant in 2011. https://www.youtube.com/@NordicRootsDance

Learn about Norse rune shapes and meanings with Komme Alle, Come Everyone. This invocation song was written by Kari in 2003 and choreographed by Carol for group dancing in 2011. Dance runes in both group and solo "Covid" versions.

We will learn "Folklore Gangar 21" - choreographed by Carol for dancing alone during Covid. It teaches the basics of body movement, svikt, tyngde, and kraft through Teleganger, a walking dance from Carol's home area in Norway. Learn what to listen for in the Hardanger fiddle, Norway's national instrument. Then we dance Telegangar in pairs or groups of three. Transitioning from solo dance to paired dances reveals even more rune shapes made with our bodies. Here we also learn to turn with one another, skills that will apply to other couple dances.

Winter is the season for Jul Tree Dancing and Jul Goat Visiting. Learn dances and song games to share with friends and family this winter season.

Join us for one or all of the sessions for a good workout of the body, mind, and holiday spirit!
    No partner necessary. Non-gendered teaching.
